Biomolecules are structural and functional units of cells. Carbohydrates serve as energy sources; monosaccharides exist in cyclic rings (Haworth) and open chains (Fischer). Lipids form bilayers with polar phosphate heads facing outwards and hydrophobic fatty acid tails pointing inwards.

Real-World Applications & Depth

Biomolecules are the building blocks of all living organisms. Carbohydrates serve as the primary energy source and structural material. Monosaccharides (simple sugars) like glucose cyclize in aqueous solution from open-chain Fischer projections into ring-shaped Haworth projections. The anomeric carbon (C1) can adopt α-configuration (OH pointing down) or β-configuration (OH pointing up). Lipids form biological membranes as phospholipid bilayers: hydrophilic phosphate heads face water, while hydrophobic fatty acid tails cluster inward. Saturated fats pack tightly; unsaturated fats have kinked tails from double bonds, producing a more fluid membrane.
