Biomolecules are the building blocks of all living organisms. Carbohydrates serve as the primary energy source and structural material. Monosaccharides (simple sugars) like glucose cyclize in aqueous solution from open-chain Fischer projections into ring-shaped Haworth projections. The anomeric carbon (C1) can adopt α-configuration (OH pointing down) or β-configuration (OH pointing up). Lipids form biological membranes as phospholipid bilayers: hydrophilic phosphate heads face water, while hydrophobic fatty acid tails cluster inward. Saturated fats pack tightly; unsaturated fats have kinked tails from double bonds, producing a more fluid membrane.
