The pH scale measures the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. Ranging from 0 to 14, it represents the negative logarithm of the hydronium ion concentration. Neutral solutions have a pH of 7, acidic solutions have a pH < 7, and basic (alkaline) solutions have a pH > 7.

Real-World Applications & Depth

The pH scale is a logarithmic measurement of the hydrogen ion (or hydronium, H₃O⁺) concentration in an aqueous solution. Ranging from 0 to 14, each single unit step on the pH scale represents a tenfold change in acidity or alkalinity. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are acidic, meaning they contain a higher concentration of hydronium ions compared to hydroxide ions (OH⁻). Solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic (alkaline), containing more hydroxide ions. A pH of exactly 7 represents pure water at room temperature, where the autoionization of water produces perfectly balanced equal amounts of both ions (1.0 × 10⁻⁷ M).
